License Manager

Overview

The License Manager helps manage the software license key for your Sigma Magic software. The License Manager dialog box can be opened by clicking on the License button in the Miscellaneous menu located on the main screen. main menu

There are two main groups within the License Manager: System Information and License Details.

System Information

The following information is contained in this group.
  1. Machine Key: The machine key is a unique 12 digit number starting with the letters LXS. This code is different for each computer and helps us identify your computer for license management purposes.
  2. Software Version: The software version contains three numbers separated by dots. The first number is the major version number of the software, the second number is the minor version number of the software and the last number is the bug-fix version number of the software. In addition to the software version, the version number of the R software installed on your computer is shown within parenthesis.
  3. Operating System: This is the OS that is currently installed on your computer. A limited list of Windows client version is given below. 
    • NT 5.1 & NT 5.2 (Windows NT)
    • NT 6.0 (Windows Vista)
    • NT 6.1 (Windows 7)
    • NT 6.2 & NT 6.3 (Windows 8)
    • NT 10.0 (Windows 10)
  4. Excel Version: The Excel version installed on your computer including the build number. Note that Sigma Magic software required Excel 2007 or later installed on your computer. If you are having any problems with some Sigma Magic functionality make sure that you have all the updates installed on your computer (which is indicated by the Build number). 

License Details

The following information is contained in this group.
  1. License Key: You need to enter the key provided to you in this field. This is the only text box where you can enter information in this dialog box. The license key is typically a 8 character number separated by a dash such as 1234-5678. However, it can be any length as determined by the company. Note that the license-key is case sensitive - so be careful about entering capital or small letters. Enter the license key and then click on the Activate Key to update the license key in the system. Here are some notes on the licenses:
    • Most license keys are node locked to a computer and are not transferable to other computers, unless you purchase a multi-user license key.
    • Most license keys require that you be connected to the Internet to validate the key with the server when you click on the Activate Key button. If you are unable to connect to the Internet to validate your license key, please check your proxy settings in the Options menu. If you are still unable to connect, please contact technical support.
    • If the license is activated, then the text box to enter the license key is greyed out and you will not be able to modify the license key until you deactivate the license by clicking on the Deactivate Key.
    • If you are operating the computer in a non-network environment such as a high security installation, then you can activate your license offline as covered below.
  2. License Status: The license status contains information about whether your license key is valid or not. If it says Valid, then the full functionality of the software is enabled and you can use all features of the software. This field will also specify the type of license you have entered on your computer. The following states are possible:
    • Valid for Trial Use This license is only provided for trial use to verify the functionality of the software for a limited period of time. It may not be used for commercial purposes. This license is node-locked to the computer on which it is installed. Typical duration of the license is 1 month.
    • Valid for Academic Use This license is provided to students and faculty members for academic research purposes and may not be used for commercial purposes. This license is node-locked to the computer on which it is installed.
    • Valid for Business Use (S) This license is the standard license for business users and is valid for commercial usage. This is a single computer license and is node-locked to the computer on which it is installed.
    • Valid for Business Use (M) This license is for business users and is valid for commercial usage. This is a multiple computer shared license key for multi-computer usage.
    • Invalid Version This license key was issued for an older version of the software and the license is no longer active for the version that you have installed.
    • Invalid Modules This license key was issued for specific modules within Sigma Magic software and you have tried to access a module for which you have not purchased the license.
    • Expired Key This license key was issued with a date that has since passed and hence your software is no longer active.
    • Invalid Computer This license key was issued for a different computer and hence this license is not active on the computer on which it is currently being installed at.
    • Invalid Key This license key has not been issued by the company or the user may have typed the license key incorrectly while entering the license key in the computer.
  3. License Expiry: This field contains the date that the license expires on your computer. If the license does not have an expiry date (such as a perpetual license), then this field will show as "None".
  4. E-Support Expiry: This field contains the expiry date of your E-support maintenance contract. Typically, E-Support is provided for free for the first year from purchase of your license. After the first your, you will need to purchase an extension to continue to receive E-support.
  5. Trial Request In order to try out the different functionality of the software, the company may provide you with a trial license key. When you enter this key, the software is activated for the trial period (usually one month). If you have not used the trial version earlier on this computer, then the trial period is activated. Once you initiate a trial request, there is not way to stop or pause the trial request and the software can be used during the duration of the trial. Once the trial period expires, you will not be able to reuse the same key to continue the trial. You will need to contact the company again for a trial extension key. Once you enter the trial extension key and click on the Activate Key button, the trial period is extended for you. license 4
  6. Offline Request and Offline Activate For computers that don't have network access you can use the offline request to activate the software license. Click on the offline activate radio button at the bottom of the license manager. This will display a small blue rectangle at the bottom of the userform. When you click on this button, you can generate and save the offline request activation xml file. You will need to share this file along with the machine key found in your license manager with the company who will use this information to issue a license key for this computer.   7. Once you receive this activation key file from the company, click on Activate Key to upload the activation file to your computer. Note that you will be able to upload this file only when the radio button at the bottom is selected as offline activation otherwise the system will try to perform online activation with our server. Once you upload the file, the system will show that your license key has been activated. Similarly, when you deactivate the key, you will be able to save a file that you can mail to the company as proof that you have deactivated the key from this computer.
If you do not have a valid license or would like to renew your license key, you can purchase a license key by visiting our website or contacting our help desk. If all the information entered is correct and up-to-date as expected which means you have the latest version of the software and your license key is valid, then both the System Information and License Keys should have a green bar next to them otherwise the colors of the bar may be either yellow or red.

How do I upgrade from a temporary license to a permanent license?

You can place a request on our website to purchase the license key. Once you enter the requested details and make the payment, your license key will be emailed to you immediately.

My license status shows Invalid Date even though I have a valid license key?

The license manager relies on the system date to determine if your license is valid. Hence it is important that the computer has the right dates set. If the date/clock is incorrect on your computer, then Sigma Magic software may not install the license key on your system until you fix the date to the correct value or it may report that the system has an invalid date.

I entered a license key but it is still not showing full functionality?

Make sure that you are connected to the Internet when you validate the license key. When the software has any concerns, it may check with our server for the validation of the license key. The software uses the same proxy settings as Internet Explorer. So, if Internet Explorer is able to connect to the Internet, then the software should also be able to connect to the Internet. Please contact the help desk for more details if you are unable to activate the license.

How do I update the Sigma Magic software version?

If you click on Check Updates and you find that a later version of the software is available, you can download that version and run the Setup file. It will replace your existing version of the software. You will have to close and re-open Excel and the new version of the software will be now available.

Can I update the software by visiting the website without using Check Updates?

If you download the software yourself, you need to make sure that your license key is still valid for the new major version of the software. When you click on Check Updates, the software will indicate to you if your license key will still work with the newer version. If you manually update your software without checking your license key functionality, the new software may not work for you. Please save your old setup file in case you need to re-install the older version.

What are possible reasons for not being able to activate the license key online?

Some of the possible reasons for not being able to activate the license key online are:

  • The computer is not able to connect to our server. Make sure that you have setup the proxy settings correctly on Internet Explorer (not Chrome, Firefox etc.)
  • Our server that handles license request may be temporarily down. Please try again after a few minutes.
